Responsibilities of an MSIC holder

You must wear your MSIC at all times when you are in a maritime security zone.

Your MSIC must:

• Be attached to your outer clothing
• Be worn at or above waist height
• Be on the front or side of your body or on your upper arm
• Be wholly and clearly visible.

Remember:

• Your MSIC is not transferable - only you can use it
• Do not give or loan your MSIC to anyone else
• Your MSIC must be kept in a safe and secure location whilst not in use
• You cannot use a photocopy of your MSIC, in lieu of your MSIC
• It is an offence to contravene the regulations on how and where an MSIC must be worn.

You must notify your MSIC issuing body within seven days if your MSIC is lost, stolen or destroyed.

You must return your MSIC to the issuing body within 30 days if:

• It expires
• It is cancelled
• It has been damaged, altered or defaced
• If you no longer have an operational need to enter a maritime security zone at least once a year.

It is an offence to retain your MSIC if you no longer need it or it has been cancelled.

Penalties may apply for MSICs not returned. The penalty is 10 units. Each penalty unit is worth A$222.

If you change your name, your MSIC ceases to be valid one month after the day on which the name change is made.

If you are convicted of any criminal offences by the courts (that are listed on the maritime relevant offence list) while you hold an MSIC, you must declare them to AusCheck within seven days.
