In order to help preserve the environment in which Pilbara Ports operates, we carry out the following environmental initiatives:
Pilbara Ports proudly partners each spring with Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and local industry (Rio Tinto, Woodside and Yara Pilbara), to host a free Bird Watching and Cultural Heritage community event.
The event showcases the unique cultural and environmental landscape of Murujuga National Park, including native and migratory birds and rock art, and provides an opportunity for the community to learn and engage with specialists in each field.
Pilbara Ports participates in a range of community clean-up programs and initiatives.
These initiatives include the Industrial Communities Against Rubbishing our Environment program, which Pilbara Ports leads and coordinates in Dampier.
Pilbara Ports also holds regular industry clean-up events at the Port of Port Hedland with Port users, leaseholders and local environmental organisations to reduce litter on port lands.
The Mangrove Mates program is Pilbara Ports’ environmental education initiative, developed to educate primary school-aged children about the importance of mangroves to the local environment.
The program is delivered to hundreds of students in primary schools across the Pilbara each year, featuring in-class presentations and hands-on activities including potting mangrove seedlings to be raised in our mangrove nursery.
Pilbara Ports maintains six osprey nesting platforms on, or associated with, navigation aids within the Port of Port Hedland.
Ospreys are known to nest on artificial structures and have previously used the port’s channel markers to build their nests.
The nesting platforms are designed to allow ospreys to build their nest above the navigational equipment and away from human interactions and disturbance.
