The channel entry project aims to enable greater opportunities for vessels visiting the port, primarily inbound empty bulk cargo vessels, to take a more direct route to enter the channel closer to the Inner Harbour, thereby reducing a range of navigational risks and improving operational efficiency at the port.
Pilbara Ports holds a sea dumping permit for capital dredging associated with the channel entry project.
Pilbara Ports is required to report annually to the commonwealth environmental regulator for this project.
In 2014, Pilbara Ports was granted state environmental approval under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 to develop and operate a new multi-user general cargo facility and logistics hub at Lumsden Point, Port Hedland. The approval was amended in 2024 to incorporate dredge material management area C (DMMA C), which was initially developed by BHP to accept seabed material from capital dredging in the Port Hedland inner harbour as part of BHP’s rapid growth project six at Nelson Point.
The Lumsden Point general cargo facility includes development of a land-backed wharf, access channel, swing basin and berth pockets designed to accept two Handymax size vessels.
The general cargo facility will connect to a logistics hub with direct access to Great Northern Highway, which is intended to be available for a combination of common user access and long-term leaseholder arrangements.
